I work in IT for a local school district. I got the job offer this past October, and the commute was short, so I was happy to sign on. While the pay wasn't great, I didn't think I was in a position to negotiate for anything higher (and I was new to salaried positions overall) so I took the first offer.
Boy… What a mistake that was.
The pay is abysmal for the sheer amount of work I'm doing – We're chronically understaffed, as I came to find out, and as a result I'm doing the work of 2-3 people. I've been looking for a new job somewhere, ANYWHERE, that doesn't involve me working 7-4 even during the summer. Not that my boss knows. Don't tell anyone ANYTHING, especially not about current job hunts.
To make things better, the department just went through a shift in titles, too, where our old boss left and some of my coworkers have moved up the ladder. As a result, I'm being brought in to cover the previous guy's responsibilities. While normally I could grin and bear it, this guy's work involves me being the sole tech at another school building 40 minutes away from this one!
Don't get me wrong, I can and will drop this lava-cooked potato the second I get the opportunity, but I wish I didn't have to. Furthermore, I wish I wasn't so brainwashed by this need to rise and grind that I could up and quit without worrying about “Oh, noooo, what will my coworkers do? How will the district cope without meeeee?”
Consider this a vent post, if you want. I'm at my wits' end here, and I'll take advice/support where I can get it.
