They laughed in my face about my disability then called me lazy when I left.

About a year ago I moved out of state for college and got my first job at a popular ice cream shop associated with a huge company. I was so excited to work there, turns out it was a living hell. For starters I have Ulcerative Colitis. I made this known during my interview and explained what it entails. I gave a note from my specialist stating that there are times my condition becomes physically disabling. I kept my boss updated on every little personal thing. All was good until I got sicker, that’s when the true colors showed. My meds stoped working as well and I wasn’t feeling good once shift. I let my boss know that and what my symptoms were but said I’ll stick around to see how I feel. He didn’t say anything. He just laughed, shook his head, and walked away. A few hours later…

A few hours later I was extremely nauseous and needed to leave. He said okay but to stop by his office first. I was given a verbal warning that if I didn’t fix my attendance I’d be fired. That itself makes sense, it sucks but makes sense. However this company runs on attendance points (like in high school) and my attendance points counted against when I had freaking Covid???

At this point I’ve almost been there 3 months. I’ve moved form retail to serving ice cream and I worked so hard because I absolutely loved it! I came in one morning and I was moved down from my area because they had to “train others” I wasn’t put back into retail. I was put in pretty much a fake position. I was a greeter. Now everyone in the shop had to greet costumers. This position is used for peoples first day so they can look around the store and learn the layout, or when the theater next door lets out and we get a flood of people though the back doors. For 7 hours they wanted me to walk around a say hello to costumers. For 7 hours. I asked my manager to go home and when she asked why I told her it’s because I didn’t like they job anymore and that this position was a waste of my time. She put me on retail real fast.

After that I was done. I stopped showing up and didn’t answer any of my bosses calls. I mean I was getting fired anyways.

I learned that after I left my boss called me lazy to anyone who would listen. He did that often, shit talking employees to other employees that is. Now, a year later, everyone I worked with besides 3 people have quit. My favorite coworker quit and couldn’t even tell him why because she knew he would tell everyone.

Hope you enjoyed my rant. I’m looking into filing an official complaint.

I now work at a small independently owned coffee shop across the street. My boss is lovely and works with me to build a schedule that isn’t too physically exhausting.
