No compete bs?

So this isn’t about me but a family member of mine we’ll call X. Basically X is leaving a very toxic work environment at a small company. They had received an offer from a much larger company for a way better offer. X put in their resignation/two week notice at the smaller company. While in the offer process with the new company X was asked if they had signed a no compete and they were not sure. They went to HR of their current employer and was told they hadn’t signed a no compete and they should now. X had already turned in their resignation at this point but was still working. Out of good faith they signed the no compete, (trust me I know they shouldn’t have signed it at all). Basically I need to know if this is still a valid no compete even though it was signed…

Or if there is an easy way to work around this and not have to spend a fortune on a lawyer.
