Has anyone tried the “Asshole” approach?

I’ve been speaking to my friends about work and how I stay long hours to finish my objectives and tasks while he told me he leaves two hours early every day and they’ve already offered him a promotion. His theory is nice guys always get stepped on while assholes will make it to the top quicker. Is this true for anyone?
