I’m being forced to go back to the office

I’ll start this by saying that I am a one man department in my office and my boss sits in another city 5+ hours away. He leaves me alone because I am a strong producer and am well liked in the company. I got a call out of the blue from him the other day telling me he was at a regional meeting of managers and another manager in my office (a manager of another business unit that has no authority over me at all) approached him and mentioned that “they miss seeing me in the office” and that their folks “miss connecting with me”. He tried to shrug it off, but the manager mentioned that people on their team were wondering why I get to WFH full time, but they can’t. I’ll start this by saying that I am a one man department in my office and my boss sits in another city 5+ hours away. He tried to shrug it off, but the manager mentioned that people on their team were wondering why I get to WFH full time, but they can’t. For context, we went back to the office on a hybrid basis in mid-March, I never did. I decided to stay home. My wife was pregnant and it was easier for me to help with my other 3 kids if she needed it, plus she had doctors appointments and what not. I also moved further from the office and gas was $5/gal so I definitely wasn’t commuting an hour each way per day, paying for gas plus $10/day to park. My boss didn’t care because I’m a top performer. Now, he’s in a tough spot and I am sort of being forced to go back because this other manager with no authority over me bitched about me not being in the office. I respect my boss and like him as a person, so I’ll do this for him so he doesn’t get caught up in this, but I’m just so incredibly jacked off at this other manager and whomever on her team couldn’t mind their own freaking business about my work arrangement. It’s shit like this that made me not want to go back to the office in the first place. Sorry for the text wall, I’m on mobile.
