The company did not attempt to negotiate, or counter my counter whatsoever. It is worth noting that this was for a Director level role, and that their initial offer was very low (roughly $30K below industry standard). My counter offer was modest to say the least (countered for $15K more) instead of the $30K due to the role being remote, and I am willing to accept a lesser salary for the remote position). They replied to my counter offer email the following morning, stating that they would not increase the offer, and that they were rescinding the offer. They did not give me an option to accept the initial offer, or to talk through it. Their response caught me off guard, as they stated multiple times that I was by far their top candidate, and the only one truly qualified for the role (60+ applicants). They also spent the last 30 minutes of the final interview talking me into the role (even though I was already interested- obviously). Anyone else have a similar experience? Is this some common tactic that I am somehow unfamiliar with after ten years in this industry? Why would you not at least attempt to still hire the candidate?
