I know someone who has inherited a multimillion pound business, with few employees. The business is situated in a high cost of living area, where a 2 bed starter home is £300,000. The business owner was complaining that minimum wage (£9.50 before tax) is enough to live off, and that no one is applying for the jobs because they are lazy due to receiving a few months of furlough payments in 2020: baring in mind, this business received significant government grants during the first lockdown.
The second complaint was that the people that they interview don't have the same heart or desire in the job as the owner does. Why would they, it isn't their business and when you pay £20,000 a year and you pay yourself 10 times as much.
The answer in their eyes was to do their jobs on top of their workload, and then complain about their workload. If they doubled the salary, they would easily find someone willing to do the job/
