Is it necessary to tell your supervisor that you’re resigning before sending the resignation letter?

I work as a chef and was verbally abused by my head chef on Saturday. I went home and sent a resignation letter to the HR. Most of the articles I read on quitting your job, mentioned that the employee has to speak to the manager/supervisor first. Will it affect my notice period for not doing so?
