I know this sounds conspiratorial but this is what happened at my old company before I quit and some many companies in the news. We laid off like 1000 corp employees a few weeks after our full return to office. Tesla announcing their Return to Office and then laying off 10% of employees and many others have followed that model since. All of these tech companies announcing their return to office but also that their headcount doesn't match productivity like with Google in recent news. I think they're doing three things by doing a return to office: getting people who don't like it to quit to save money on severance payout, making it easier to conduct the layoffs in person, and then scaring your current employees making them not want to fight for remote work anymore because they're looking for job security. I wouldn't say this is the only reason for return to office but I wouldn't be shocked if this was part of it.
