I am/was a barista at a local pie shop. I was hired in October after I quit my old barista job for being discriminated against and bullied daily by upper management… I wont even get into THAT
So at the interview they tell me I make $15 but that I get cash + electronic tips and split it w the people who worked that day (max 4). We get our tips every 2 weeks. Cool cool, i get a free meal per shift. Because this is a local business, at the end of the night I have to count & close the drawer. So I see how much we make in tips per day. I “make” an average of $30 a day in tips. Not for nothing, I’m great with customers and work hard
The first time I get mt tips, they seem a bit skinny to me. My coworker agrees but I don’t mind too much because I’m just grateful to have a chill job after my previous one.
Fast forward to now: I hadnt gotten my tips in a MONTH. They finally arrive and I go check them out… $120 total. For a month of work. There is no transparency in the math or how they divide it. I look over my pay stubs (bc they “cant afford” direct deposit) and notice my income doesnt match the amount of hours I actually worked
So I cashed in on my sick hours and start my new job Monday. I refuse to be bullied or taken advantage of. I was scheduled a few more days but honestly why give them my time and energy when I expect to be ripped off?
what i learned: local business isnt a promise of a fair business
