I accepted a counteroffer but I’m somewhat regretting it

Not sure how I let things get this bad but someone said my job is starting to sound like a kdrama so I found that amusing. I had resigned from my job as a Marketing Supervisor only making $20/hr because I accepted a new job offer as a Content Writer making $37/hr, fully remote. However, after I put in my 2 weeks at my current job (Supervisor) they decided to counteroffer me the position of Digital Marketing Manager at $35/hr. It’s a new position that my new boss had created and she said she realized that I could do the work once I started training her on some aspects of Salesforce and Marketing Cloud. Our department has also gone through a lot of chaos over the past several months due to people leaving and my former boss getting fired, so I’m kind of the last thread left who knows all…

Our department has also gone through a lot of chaos over the past several months due to people leaving and my former boss getting fired, so I’m kind of the last thread left who knows all of our established processes and future plans. I believe this is the main reason they want to keep me. So, my boss begs me to stay 2 days after putting in my 2 weeks and offers me this position…and I accept it because they decided to give me higher pay & remote work, I was feeling uneasy/sad about leaving because I do like working with my team, and I don’t know what to expect with this new job.

Though, I later found out from a friend in our IT Department (he’s been friends with my new boss for years now) that my boss called him asking if she should try to keep me or not and he basically said to give me whatever I want to get me to stay, which is what she did. But one thing that keeps bugging me is that both our Head of HR and my boss are somewhat blaming me for not speaking up about all the duties I was doing, which is why they didn’t know to pay me more. Granted, I never directly asked anyone for more pay because I had wanted to leave earlier, but them blaming me for not getting promoted is total BS. First of all, my former boss had been trying to promote me to Marketing Manager before she left & she told me HR/Accounting said they didn’t have the budget for it. Secondly, I saw an email between my boss and HR where the Head of HR said something along the lines of “we need to be paying her at least $25/hr to keep her as Marketing Supervisor” so he clearly knew I was being underpaid. I was also having to do the work of 2-3 people for months because former team members had quit. And even though my current boss is new, she knew I was being paid $20/hr as a Supervisor & didn’t see a problem with it.

I also just recently went out for drinks with my former boss because we’re still friends and she told me that when she was promoted to Marketing Manager when she was still at the company, they were only paying her $20/hr. $20/hr!!! For a Marketing Manager with 3 people under her with all the skills I have and much more! They later promoted her to VP and she did get a pay bump but still. And I’ve heard countless instances of this company just not valuing its employees with pay, not respecting mental health issues, or just being plain ignorant. Even my friend in IT (the one who told my current boss to keep me) said that our CFO told our former Head of IT (who also recently quit because he felt burnt out) that my friend’s job as a full stack engineer is not a “revenue-generating position” even though his responsible for the majority of our leads.

I think I could learn a lot of skills in this new role as Digital Marketing Manager and the company would pay for all my training, but I think it’s going to be very stressful and I quite frankly don’t trust my boss. I know the primary reason she’s keeping me is because of all the knowledge I have of our current processes. She has shown a lot of interest in mentoring me and connecting me with her contacts but I don’t know. My plan was to stay & learn as much in this Digital Marketing role as possible for the next 3-6 months and then leave with more valuable knowledge & experience under my belt. But I’m wondering if I should just jump ship now and take the lifeboat I have with the new job while it’s still available. Content Writing is what I’m best at but I’m also very interested in digital marketing & I think it can aid my writing since I would be doing mostly B2B content.
