Leverage

I’ve been at my job for almost 7 months, it’s my first “big boy job” out of school. When I originally interviewed for the position I was relocating across the country (US) so they kind of had me by the balls with a low ball offer – I needed the proof of income to secure a rental – and they justified it by calling me a “new grad”. Technically speaking I was a new grad by definition but (in order of accrual) I have an associates degree, a bachelors, two certifications, and another associates (which is the school I had just graduated from). On top of that I had multiple years of experience in the exact setting I was being hired into. I didn’t like it but I had no option but to accept the offer. Still more money than I’ve ever made. I kept my head down and worked hard to show my worth. Sure enough I excel at the job and they start loading up my plate. All cool – but absolutely felt under appreciated financially for the amount of work I was (still am) doing. Even though I haven’t been there a year they’re conducting year end reviews. Finally a chance to voice my opinions on my pay rate!

Just about everyday I scroll indeed and actively look for other positions and nothing came of my multiple applications – but this week one landed! Some of the PTO the new company flaunted didn’t quite match up to what I have with my current job and I was able to negotiate my way to an extra $3/hour compared to what I make now!! At my performance review I plan on presenting the new offer letter and allowing them to counter offer and if they don’t it’ll be an easy time to submit my two week notice.

Open to suggestions on how to present it. This sub has taught me A LOT about how to create leverage with employers and I’m ready to stick it to them!
