We're two years into a pandemic, the effects of climate change are inescapable, there's armed conflicts around the globe, and a friend of mine had to bury her daughter last week from a fentanyl overdose.
But I'm still here, running my little shop in a dystopian fucking nightmare, because, somehow, the alternative is worse. I can't close for a day without fucking over three other people, and it's not like my employees are realistically dealing with any less, so I can't call anyone for a shift. There's nowhere to pivot to, no one to lean on, nothing to hope for and no end in fucking sight.
I would hope that maybe global catastrophes and looming war would help put life in perspective, but alas, no. In just the past 72 hours I have had a customer throw a tantrum at one of my employees about being asked to wear a mask, had someone throw their across my shop because we didn't have their favourite flavour in (our distributor has been out for a bit), and had some very disgusting comments directed at me when a customer tried to claim they had purchased a device from us that we don't even sell. Why the fuck are people like this? The world is shitty and hard enough without having to interact with a bunch of fucking middle aged toddlers.
And through all this, the sun is shining on arms manufacturers, and the wealthy elites grew their fortunes by like an order of magnitude in a year. Why, as a society, are we supporting wars and wealthy elites when the vast majority of us live without hope?
