Not a salary employee but still required to check my emails on off days?

I’m a team lead at my place of employment (not a manager, they’re two totally different jobs) and I’m paid hourly. Work 40 hours each week while often going overtime so let’s say generally I’m pulling 45 hours each week. I do my fair share and bust my ass for a company who probably does not care about me whatsoever. Well I got called up to a meeting where I was asked “why haven’t you been responding to emails the last couple days?” For context: I’m currently in the middle of moving and have been out of work the past couple days so I don’t have a lot of time to catch up on emails. plus I’m an hourly employee and not salary so I don’t think I should have to check my email on my off time if I’m not being paid to. well I told them that and…

Is it even legal for an employer to require an hourly employee to be available to respond to emails if they aren’t paying them?
