I work in a large retail hardware store at a department desk and was waiting there asking if customers’ needed any assistance while they’re shopping. Members of another department came over to me and told me that there were customers that needed help in the shelf cutting area of our department. I made them aware that I wasn’t trained by any member, supervisor, or managers on the safety precautions or introduced how to cut the shelving. I didn’t feel comfortable doing it, but the manager from that department, and other members of their team called over to one of the store managers, Rick, who told them to have me try to do it. I told them to tell him I wasn’t trained on how to cut shelving by anyone. Rick’s response was for me to go ahead and try to do it. That they’ll send someone over if there’s any issue. I left shortly to check on the customer and to see the amount they wanted done, then returned to where members from the other department were assembled to ask for help and they’d all disbursed. There was no one else on shift so I went back and went ahead and attempted to cut the shelving with a pair of bolt cutters with the assistance of the customers. Is being so improperly trained by your job legal? I've been working at this location for about two years now and from the beginning I was rarely ever trained by anyone. The most training I received was from pre-recorded sessions.
