Back in the mid 2000's (maybe around 2004 or 2005), I worked at a call center for Roger's Wireless (Canadian telecom). They had hired me for customer service but then moved me to outbound sales. I didn't know how to stand up for myself back then so I just went with it. I was actually good at it and since we got commissions on sales, I was soon the top seller and was earning way more than the measly $11.25/hr they'd hired me at.
Because I was routinely making 3 to 4 k per month, my team lead and his manager got salty and promoted me into the made up position of “assistant team lead”. They bumped my pay up a whopping 50 cents to 11.75 per hour but I'd basically be in charge of all the work the team lead was doing before. I had to manage schedules for my team, call and arrange replacements for call outs, handle “corrective actions” for people who were fucking up and basically being the TL's bitch. On top of everything, I was still supposed to make sales calls when I had no other work but without commissions because I was on the “management track”.
I quickly realized I'd be doing way more work for way less money so I complained but my team lead and manager basically ganged up on me to be a team player. I stupidly accepted. Fortunately however a few months later they didn't want to give me a 1 week leave to go on a camping trip with some friends so I decided I'd had enough and stopped going to work. Fuck em and every employer that tries to exploit people who don't know how to stand up for themselves.
