Orientation

Can someone please explain to me why so many corporations need to have orientations that last literally hours, for minimum wage jobs? I hate them more than anything. Especially when the majority isn't talking about a mutual relationship, but the company history and the mission and all that other bullshit I don't care about. I got hired at a CVS and had to go to not one, but two four hour orientation sessions on Saturday. Of course it was at a completely different location from the store I was hired at, and there was no OTJ. After those two Saturdays, I had to go to MY store and complete like 12 more hours of computer based learning before I could even start work; as a cashier. I've been running a register since I was 15, and I'm in my 30s. That was by far the worst. Aldi did the same…

Can someone please explain to me why so many corporations need to have orientations that last literally hours, for minimum wage jobs? I hate them more than anything.

Aldi did the same thing though with an unnecessary length of orientation. A whole four hours to watch a power point, while they talk about the company mission, the owners and how much money they save, but very little about their employees, benefits etc. I didn't even stay. I told them I had an emergency and then left.

Then Wal-Mart. I applied there last XMAS to work a season for extra money. They scheduled orientation from 4 – 6. Yet the manager who was conducting it, got through it quick and straight up left. While telling us we had to stay there until 6 on the dot regardless. They literally made us organize and fold towels in the aisle just waiting for time to pass. I never went back.

It's not about the task being boring, or tedious or whether I think it's unnecessary or a waste of time. It's about the fact that these places have no respect for someone else's time. And saying, “Yeah we're done with what you came for but now we're just going to make you do work for the sake of doing work.” I'm sick of being treated like a complete moron in the process of trying to find new work.

It's like one of those video games that won't let you skip the tutorial when you've already beaten it. Sure some teens and young adults may need a bit more instruction on a first job, but it's not even about that. It's about these corporations wasting time trying to condition you to their outlook.

Am I the only one that finds it condescending?
