Mainly just venting here/wanting comfort, but I'm really getting sick and tired of my employer (in retail)
To start, they act like they're understaffed and the employees working should be doing more, yet there's so many people sitting at home wanting to work but rarely get scheduled for shifts.
I've been one of the unfortunate people in the situation of barely being scheduled (after previously being one of their “go to employees”). I asked my manager who told me it's up to the department who oversees schedules. So I contacted that department who said they can't help, but will follow up with my manager. My managers haven't said a single thing to me yet, so clearly someone lied here or are just avoiding me at this point.
And now it seems like they're cracking down on the most minuscule things just to make problems of nothing. The store doesn't have any anti theft measures, so they've dealt with lots of thefts. But the managers are acting like the employees are at fault, and aren't working hard enough to “protect the store” (spoiler alert, you can't help a customer while also playing the role of security in another section at the same time). And the latest thing which bothered me, a customer came in, ignored me and my coworkers, went straight to the manager (not knowing they were the manager) and asked for help. The manager later came to us and was like “why aren't you guys doing your job and helping?”, and we were at a loss for words. We are doing our jobs, but sometimes customers dont care and just ignore the staff who interact with them when they come in and ask for help elsewhere.
This whole place just feels so shady and messed up. I can't believe they're a major company too (I want to write a glassdoor/indeed review, but don't want to be caught/have the review tied to me). The shady managers and horribly run place is ridiculous. I've heard a number of people state their displeasure, half the people seemed to have moved on to other jobs, yet the managers still schedule those people regularly, not even caring that they dont work here anymore, while people begging to work get nothing.
And sounds like a good chunk of people have discussed quitting once things die down in the summer. It just blows my mind how incompetent a company can be, and the expectations of minimum wage workers compared to other minimum wage jobs is beyond ridiculous.
And they also expect people to do this job highly motivated and with a smile on their face. Well, employees are being underpaid, can't make ends meet, and only work here a few times a week if even that. How happy can they be?
(Yes, I know people will instantly be like “quit”, “find another job” and all that, and believe me, I'm trying to find work elsewhere, but no luck, although it's tough to leave this employer because there's so many paths to set you up in this industry and not many employers are in this industry too, the problem is that it near impossible to get on any path)
