So yeah.
I am a speech-language pathologist for a home healthcare company in the southeast. I drive around all day and help people talk and eat and try to laugh, it’s great.
I have been working for this company for about a year, after I was working in a nursing home for a few. I started part-time with great pay, and then they asked me to come on full time. I got paid salary direct deposit, and the pay was even better!
On Friday they called me in for my yearly evaluation. I thanked my manager saying that I love this job and the people that I worked with. They said I would be getting a raise!
Then this Monday I get an email. They said that they needed to do another “evaluation”. As soon as I came in they told me that they were overpaying me. My higher up manager said that they paid me about 20k more than I should’ve gotten, that through some error I was being paid my part-time rate (somebody didn’t switch it over). They told me that it was my responsibility to have notified them that this was the incorrect rate (I have NEVER seen any of my pay stubs because all my pay went to direct deposit).
I then made the joke “well, at least I don’t have to pay it back!” and nobody in the room except me giggled.
Even further they told me that they were going to cut my salary, which is 20k less than I am making now.
They tried to get me to sign forms, then they said that they would get hr involved, and my manager said “well, this isn’t a bank!”
I said, “if I quit tomorrow, is this company gonna try and come after me for that money?” and more crickets…
I didn’t sign anything, and said I’m getting a lawyer. I can say now that I have been to a meeting where they cut my pay 20 thousand dollars and THEN tried to get me to pay them 20 thousand dollars. What a world we live in y’all.
I don’t know what to do, but I know I’m gonna be okay
