Hey hardware store fix your scheduling and staffing

I'm just so frustrated with my workplace right now. I'm a cashier at a hardware store. Two weeks ago there was a gap in scheduling that left us without a closing cashier shift lead. It was a little strange, but we made do. My co-worker and I were given price override authority since we were the most senior cashiers, and we finished the night. It all went pretty smoothly. Well, last night, it happened again. All front-end shift leads (apart from the Assistant Store Manager) were scheduled to leave by 6:00 Leaving a 4-hour gap with no one but the ASM and supervisors from other departments to give us overrides and close the store. I also heard we're out closers for Monday and Tuesday too. I live in a college town, so it's not surprising that a lot of the full-time summer workforce would go back to part-time…

I live in a college town, so it's not surprising that a lot of the full-time summer workforce would go back to part-time while they are in school. Despite this pretty obvious fact they started hiring cashiers at the beginning of August. This meant when people were finally all trained and on the floor, it was about a week before class started.

Because of the complexity and age of our systems, not every brand new hire can do all the front-end stuff at once. Customer service and lumber registers are the hardest to run. So this led to experienced part-time cashiers receiving scheduling that was reminiscent of full-time workers. They were still part-time hours, but you'd work 5-6 days in a row. You'd also be scheduled during school and when you go to the staffing admin about it, they'd tell you there's nothing they can do because the schedule's already out.

This isn't even the worst of it. Going back to that front-end shift lead issue, we've had three to four shift leads throughout the summer. It worked well. One would open. One would come in mid-day. One would close. However, at the start of the school year, one of those shift leads went back to part-time because of school. It was fine for a while. They put out a listing for a shift lead position and got some interest from both internal and external parties.

Everyone who applied for that position internally got rejected. Despite them being full-time and the most senior cashiers. We got very little interest externally. One person applied but was deemed not the right fit and another got a better offer.

It was okay for a while but then last week happened. Our full-time opening lumber cashier quit, leaving another position open to fill, and we were informed that one of the other shift leads was going down to part-time. This is what led to the scheduling issues mentioned above. We are in dire need of shift leads and cashiers and management haven't done much but sit on their hands.

There's a Costco coming in soon and the sentiment around the majority of the cashiers is to apply there and quit here. I've personally sent in like four applications because I can see that I am currently working on a sinking ship
