I recently started working at a bar and the job is rewarding and fun, but there’s one manager no one really likes. This manager has informed me I have 3 hours of online training to complete by wednesday, in order for me to be ‘fully employed legally’, as it’s a requirement in my area that bar staff are trained in these areas. I’m fine with doing it but it’s completely unpaid, so I work 20 hours a week whilst studying for a degree, and I have to do this online training in my own time? Yesterday he even said to me ‘there’s no time during shifts but bus rides home are a good time to be doing this stuff’. I’m not doing a 9 hour shift, finishing at 1am then doing an hours more UNPAID work on my bus ride home, thanks. I’m seriously considering refusing to do it unless I get paid, but I do like the job and I don’t want to risk losing it. Should I tell him I’ll only do it if it’s paid? Or suck it up and just do the training. In my mind, anything work related you should be paid for.
