How does one become a union delegate, or get involved with that type of work?

I dated a girl once who was getting into that. She had someone from her union approach her. I work at a private daycare and although I like my job, it's not sustainable even while tutoring on the side. So now I'm looking to lean into something else I'm passionate about but like I said, I don't really know where to start. How can I get involved?
