“Paid” holidays are not paid if they just shift the holiday’s hours onto your regular day off that week.

Boss claims we have about 4-7 paid holidays per year- Memorial Day, Labor Day, Xmas Eve, New years Eve. Historically, we also have had 2-3 snow closures per year. Xmas and New Years are Sundays, which my workplace is closed regardless. Now, I work a 5 day work week. Sunday off for everybody, and I get 1 day off each week in addition. My day off is Wednesday. If my boss just closes work on these holidays but makes me work on my usual day off (WED), then I'm still working my full work week…. This essentially means that the holidays are NOT paid days off. WA state mandates 1 hour of Paid Sick Leave per 40 hours worked, so I accrue 60+ hours of PSL per year, so in a sense, I get 1 week of “Paid Time Off”, but so does everybody else…

WA state mandates 1 hour of Paid Sick Leave per 40 hours worked, so I accrue 60+ hours of PSL per year, so in a sense, I get 1 week of “Paid Time Off”, but so does everybody else who has a job in WA.

He does buy nice food for every employees birthday or take us out on some employee outing, which is nice, but I really don't need or care for it. I just want to work hard, and go home. Do a good job and earn my money, I dont want my work to be a family or anything. They are nice people but I don't think it should mix like that. I'd honestly rather get paid more rather than have employee birthday meals or what have you. I personally do not want anything for my own birthday except a $200 bonus or something. Not pizza for everyone.

I wish my boss would just straight up say, no I dont give PTO, instead of lying like those holidays are 'paid'.

He's a nice guy, but he's also so obsessed with cutting costs that he ends up lacking in the most important aspect of caring for your employees- THEIR PAY. The main and only reason they are there.
