Using Skills learned at old work outside of work?

I recently quit a job repairing gas appliances. I signed a non compete form stating I would not use skills outside of that employer. Is it actually illegal for me to get side work based on the skills I learned there? If he were to find out I’m using those skills outside of his business could I be in legal trouble since I signed off a non compete?? EDIT- Michigan, US.
