This is an old story from my first job… Way back at the start of my career fresh out of high school. Keep in mind it was the first job I ever walked out on despite being raised to always give and work your 2 weeks notice.
It was at a large office supply store, early 2010's. I joined under one gm, she was great, I made just over minimum and was going to be apart of their tech team after training, pay raise and new stuff, etc….I already had some certs from high school, would have been a nice college job.
Well as it turns out she was too good, she got pulled to a struggling store and we got john….John was fresh out of corporate training….John brought over his chosen cashier (his secret gf) and John didn't approve of college.
He ran the place into the ground, hired a whole one person after losing all the cashier's and almost all the office department….and he has lit the poor guy, promised him the tech job, gave it to his gf ( both me and new guy got the boot from tech job before we could start, shoulda left them) and he just kinda stopped showing up… It went down hill from there, power issues in the store, poor scheduling, relief shifts arriving late…all garbage.
Finally I'm at my limit, I'm tired, I've been fighting to fix my schedule every week as he's intentionally scheduling me during class because “I need you to focus on work not this waste of time”, I've been thru several closing shifts we're we lost power and still let people in the store only to tell them we cant check them out…I just did an opening shift. After a night of that and my relief doesn't show, and I get told I have to stay until someone else comes in…
I complain lightly and immediately get pulled into the office before I leave and get a shake down about why I'm working there…being a nice practically minimum wage worker I say money….he thing launches a spiel about how I need to find a better reason to work there than money, then a spiel about how he could mould me into something great, the next supervisor and maybe someday a manager.
I went home that day and thought, well the literal only reason I'm here is money, if that's not good enough then I'm gonna go, came back handed a 2 weeks notice in. Next day my schedule is changed to every day I have class during class for the next 2 weeks….that night power goes out, teens trash several isles, only manager there is one I hate, so as we line up outside for closing I say “wouldn't it be funny if I didn't show up to open tomorrow?” She snaps about how I shouldn't joke like that….and all I say as I walk away is “who said I'm joking”.
I know kinda long slow anti climatic story but that was my first experience with a bad job, got accused of theft once while their, was pressured into not taking breaks, hr started an anonymous report when you clocked out to report it but the gm and his lackeys would watch you clock out to see if you reported…I was young, dumb and scared of being fired and disappointing my mom. I put up with way too much frankly illegal stuff, that today I wouldn't stand for. Only side note was the gm got fired a few months later when the dm walked in on him and his secret gf going at it in the break room we never got to use. Might share another story or 2 from later in my career but right now I'm in a stable very nice position with no real complaints, took a long while to get here though
