My manager openly told me there’s zero room for growth

Hey friends, I’ll keep the details slim but: • I work at an organization with multiple tech-adjacent skillsets and a fairly sizable budget • My skillset is in the minority as far as headcount, but in no way the minority as far as workload • In this organization, raises are tied to promotions • I’ve now gone through 3 review cycles, garnering the highest score each time This time, I thought to myself, “This is it. It’s been a super shit year but damn it, you worked for this. You are clearly operating well, well beyond your level and this is your year” Today, my boss alerted me to two facts: No raise or promotion for me (same high score) Not only that, but there isn’t a “business need” for a more senior level As much as #1 hurts, sucks, and will have financial repercussions for me, I’m absolutely devastated…

Hey friends,

I’ll keep the details slim but:

• I work at an organization with multiple tech-adjacent skillsets and a fairly sizable budget

• My skillset is in the minority as far as headcount, but in no way the minority as far as workload

• In this organization, raises are tied to promotions

• I’ve now gone through 3 review cycles, garnering the highest score each time

This time, I thought to myself, “This is it. It’s been a super shit year but damn it, you worked for this. You are clearly operating well, well beyond your level and this is your year”

Today, my boss alerted me to two facts:

  1. No raise or promotion for me (same high score)
  2. Not only that, but there isn’t a “business need” for a more senior level

As much as #1 hurts, sucks, and will have financial repercussions for me, I’m absolutely devastated by #2. The salary for my position is about 100k less than junior-level professionals on my team to begin with.

The mental block of “this is just where the road ends” is really hard for me process on a few different levels.

I’d like to stay here, but I can’t get over how I am just not enough and will be priced out of affording to stay.

How do you separate yourself from your work? Finances aside, I just feel like shit.
