I’m 22 years old, a full time college student, and I got my first part time job as a cashier a month ago. While I did not know how to use a cash register, I learned how to use (most) of it after three days. I enjoyed my job for the first three weeks, however, I started dreading going to it recently. Not only do I have to manage a full time course load (15 credits this semester), I have to show up on weekdays from 6:45-11 pm and on Sunday from 5-11 pm. While I don’t mind working evenings, I think working until 11 pm is unreasonable because it does not give me enough time to focus on my schoolwork. I only get one fifteen minute break during my shift and for the rest of my shift, I have to stand in a small space for 4-6 hours, which I think is unhealthy. When there aren’t customers, which is usually around 9 pm, I have to clean the registers or get down on my hands and knees to make sure the products on the shelves look nice. I already sacrificed most of my free time, but it seems like I can’t catch a break. I don’t know how people are able to work a part time job, manage a full time college course load, and have free time, but this lifestyle is not for me. I plan to resign from my job by the end of this semester because this lifestyle is very stressful for me and the hours are unreasonable. I also think I’m getting knee pain from this job because yesterday during my shift, my knees were aching very badly and I felt the pain while I was standing and walking. Overall, the “full time college student with a part time job” lifestyle is not worth sacrificing my mental and physical health.
