Is it advisable to say what you do outside of work and how to avoid it?

I'm new to interviews. In my life most interviews were simple but now I need some help.. So I found a part time job. I go to school. They asked if I'm aware of the hours. I said yes. They asked why I'm looking for a part time job. I told them I was in school. Some of the interview questions were kind of pushy. But after leaving the interview my gut told me I probably should have avoided mentioning going to school. I wondered if I could get away with “personal matters”. What happens if they said “what personal matters”. Is it better to be honest? Cause if I kept avoiding it they might think I'm hiding something and pass me up either way. Sorry if this is the wrong sub.
