Right now megacompanies are soulless machines whose only purpose is to extract as much money as possible from their communities. They can’t be jailed like a person can, they can’t accept individual blame for their actions, and they don’t suffer any consequences because they are not even sentient.
The atrocities committed by these big businesses is only possible because no one person can be held accountable — CEOs can hide behind bureaucracy or cut and run if things get bad. Decisionmakers that are called out for abuses/crimes just use scapegoats or are quietly “fired” with a huge severance. The company has then paid the fine and is allowed to live on, and just replace the cog.
