Today I stood up for myself.

Today I interviewed for a new job. I am currently on EI (Canada) and I have to apply for jobs in case they audit me, but I also do want to find a new job that is well rounded and pays decent. I have a lot of experience in my field and left my last role due to mental illness brought on by burn out. Anyways, I when I applied for this role I didn’t really read the outline too closely because I haven’t had a call back for any jobs yet, so I guess wasn’t actually expecting them to contact me? Does that make sense? Anyways, I did get a call, so I put some research in to the role and discovered that this franchise is mashing 3 roles into 1, and calling it a new term that they feel better suits the role.

However, the pay works out to just 1k more than they’re offering for each individual role at other franchises.

I did the interview and I asked clarifying questions about the role and really confirmed that I was not seeing things – this is 3 roles for the price of 1 and the salary is non-negotiable ad they don’t have the budget. I mentioned this to the interviewer who looked taken aback, but listened. And she asked me what I’d want for this role if I were to receive an offer. I told her my price, and she said she’d get back to me.

Either way this works out, I am really proud of myself for standing my ground and being true to my standards. These companies want to operate with the mindset that random strangers are going to want to bleed for their business to grow? No honey. I need to earn a living, I’m not going to risk burn out again so you can save money. If you can’t afford to run a business…you can’t run a business.

Edit: I forgot to mention, the salary they’re offering is actually $16k less than the average starting salary offered for that role in my province. I also let the interviewer know that.
