- Got paid less than advertised?
- Packed up everything and moved to a new place for a job only to get bamboozled?
- Forced to do work that was WAY out of the posted job description?
- Forced to work in highly unsafe conditions with inadequate PPE?
- Got fired when you dared to speak up – over and over?
- Got ignored when pointing out labour laws?
- Get told to “drop it” when the abusive employers are “too big to fail” ?
- Spent countless years of your life picking up pieces only to get it knocked down again?
- Get your work undermined by less qualified and ignorant management who do not know what the job actually entails?
- Get fucked over by authorities who have 0 intention of actually enforcing existing laws?
pfffffft. BEEN THERE. DONE THAT. DECADES AGO.
I feel y'all. But sometimes I also wonder if many on here have been living under a rock OR just never gave a shit until something personally affected them. Which one is it?
How many times have y'all gone taken your employers to court, even when you know corporate-Goliath will win ? How many of y'all actually put your money where your mouth is?
Most of the posts here sound like a domestic abuse site.
“My spouse hits me and blames me for it, then said they love me and got me some chocolates. Wat do? “
One of my employers at a university literally told me to “not tell the authorities I was working” which was when I realized they had lied and fudged some immigration forms to get me started on work immediately. Then I asked to get paid, and then said “no paperwork no pay”.
You'd think there are laws around this sort of thing, and you would be right. What there isn't though, is enforcement and follow through by public service (i.e. the servants called government).
So then I wasted another several years of my life and life-savings trying to clear that bs up.
How can foreigners (immigrant workers) even dare to speak up when the citizens themselves don't realize what's happening in their own home?
Many “developed” cities and nations have economies that are rest on the backs of foreign labor. We have been mistreated, abused and exploited from day 1.
If you're not getting treated well by your democratically-elected officials, then just imagine how we are treated while still being forced to carry your burdens on our backs?
As a foreign worker who has been nothing but repeatedly exploited, it's really fucking frustrating to see people only just realize that this is a problem now. In fact, I don't even see many posts by foreign workers on here, because most of us do not get the luxury to even start to speak up because retaliation is swift and no one really gives a shit what happens to us.
This happens not just in low-level retail or fast-food as I often read on here. It happens at top facilities and institutions that command a lot of national and academic clout. It happens to PhDs and professionals. It happens to foreign workers who are more educated than your own elected officials.
