I have been following for a while, and never thought that I could make a difference, but after a little effort, and a few minor (and aggravating) conversations with senior management, I feel I have contributed a little more than previously, and just because I have read people's stories here.
Honestly, I would never have had the confidence to do this had I never read this sub, and the most important part, having unsolicited job offers after updating my LinkedIn profile ( and getting offers for much more money than I am making now)
Yes, I realize I had the capability of doing this before, but I never wanted to risk my job, and I have some fault in this.
This might turn out bad, but I just want to let you know my story, and just want you all to know that this sub is actually making a difference, for me at least, but I needed the confidence of job offers to make me follow through. Not all managers are bad, but we also need to keep our job.
I think that a lot of stuff posted in this sub is not great, and people are often wrong on this sub and don't give the whole story. I'm going to give you an attempt at my side.
I work in IT as a manager.
I have a few people working under me, and we are hiring. I couldn't find anyone for entry-level positions at what I still consider a decent rate. I had to up the rate, but at that rate I think it insults the people that have been doing the job currently, for years, and making similar pay to the new hires. We are going to hire them at the current market rate, but, then I would think the people that have been working for us now would be insulted, as they make a few $ an hour similar. I don't think this is fair.
Since reading this sub, I have realized, as a manager, I work for my employees, they don't work for me. They make my life easier, and I could never manage without them, and grateful to have them on my team.
Reading the posts on this sub I have realized that managers are generally considered the enemy, but I would like everyone to realize middle-level managers usually have little control.
Since I have received other job offers, which has given me more confidence, that has made me realize I now have more power than I previously thought I had, and only because I don't care about my job anymore.Since this, I have presented the management of comparable rates of all my employees, and have brought to their attention that everyone should be given 12% (on average) raises, which have been approved, and will be active this month.
Yes, I have been drinking, and please don't hold that against me while writing this post. I probably would have never written it otherwise.
I guess the TLDR is: As a manager, I work for my employees, they don't work for me. I need to be fighting for them, not against them. This sub has made a huge difference in my management style. Although, I would not consider myself evil before taking part in this cup of tea.
Im sure negativity will persist on this, but, whatever, I am learning, just like every other manager that has no power.
Im not sure if I mentioned this already, but I fought for my employees to get substantial raises, that I have never been given, and don't expect, but they were approved for them, and they are now making 10% more than previously, and I am happy with myself for that.
