Question re: Working while on break (California, USA)

I work graveyard at a 24 hour pet daycare/boarding place. I work alone and often times when I am on my meal break I need to release a pet to it's owner, answer the phone or other time-sensitive task. Typically when this happens I just extend my break by a few minutes. My shifts are 8 hours, and I also always (quite literally, always) stay later than my shift to make sure I don't leave the morning crew with extra work (we have a small staff). In this case is it illegal for me to be working while on break in this type of situation? Thanks for any input. Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense. Thank you, AW!
