I decided I finally had enough of my job in the middle of the night. For reference, I was an oil burner mechanic in the North Eastern US. I was working the night shift last night. 6pm-6am. The company dispatchers were in office, dispatching until about 8pm. I'd only be getting one call at a time, I'd clear it out when I was done and get the next call. Right as they left for the night, they dumped 10 calls into my queue. A Saturday night shift typically isn't that busy. You might get like 3 or 4 calls throughout the course of the night.
Normally, I wouldn't care. I'd just take my time at each one until 6am when my shift was over, and let the rest of the calls roll into the next day. Except the heat in my van stopped working the night before. I worked all night through sub-zero temps. I tried calling my manager, and he didn't answer. I called the service dispatchers and asked them to tell him in the morning. No one ever said anything to him yesterday.
Once I got all of those calls, I knew I wasn't going to make it through another cold as fuck night with no heat. I called him up and told him. His first words were “why the fuck didn't you tell anybody?” I told the office yesterday to tell you about it. “Oh, no one said anything. Sorry, there's nothing I can do for you.” You can't meet me at the shop and put me in a van with heat? I can do these calls if I have heat. “No. Just work your way through it, central zone (my service area) is busy tonight. You're gonna have to tough it out.”
I was just like, “Okay “. Drove the van to their shop, logged off of the tablet, and asked my dad to come pick me up. After months of dealing with these absolute assholes I finally had enough. They're the biggest privately owned fuel company in the region, and yet they have the lowest pay possible with shitty benefits. Their health care plan would've cost me almost $200 a week. The managers were absolute morons and complete scumbags. I tried working there as long as I could. I knew going in that it was only a stepping stone anyway until I found something better, but at this point, working at McDonald's would be better. Fuck those scumbags. I feel bad for leaving people with no heat, but I wasn't going to work in hazardous conditions.
