Took a day off due to heat stroke

Last Sunday I suffered a heat stroke from being in a really hot shower for over an hour. I was high and doing balancing work (dancer here) and then began losing consciousness while feeling extremely hot (along with intense ear ringing and anxiety). I had to lay down naked for over half an hour to cool myself down Didn’t know it was a heat stroke until Wednesday when I noticed some cognitive problems and heat intolerance that started since Sunday. Didn’t know it was a heat stroke until Wednesday when I noticed some cognitive problems and heat intolerance that started since Sunday. I didn’t go to work Thursday to rest since I felt like I over exerted myself Monday-Wednesday.

Friday my boss asked for a meeting. During the meeting he told me that my work performance shouldn’t go down since I was getting laid off in March. He kept mentioning that he was going to give me a good letter of recommendation which sounded like he was threatening the letter if I didn’t “keep up the work performance”

I knew he was talking about my absence Thursday because he mentioned that if I didn’t have any work to do to just tell him. I then told him I had a heat stroke and he responded with “we all have our excuses. How do you even have a heat stroke when it’s cold out.” When I tried explaining he interrupted and soon ended the meeting.

I’m worried because I would like his letter of rec but i know I’m going to need to go to the doctors to check if everything is okay because I still feel a bit off.

Is this legal? I work in California and hold a research position. I do have a lot of sick days accrued and would like to use them when necessary before I leave
