Two jobs ago (general admin role), I got called into a meeting with the General Manager and the lady a rank below him.
This guy proceeds to tell me that I've taken too much unpaid leave, more than anyone in the company including people overseas, and that I need to stop. He also said in the same breath that he was 'disappointed with my output' and he is 'seriously concerned'.
Me – “You are aware that every day of unpaid leave was for hospital appointments for my chronic pain and incurable disease? And only amounted to six half days at most?”
Him – “Yes”.
Me – “And that I'd checked with my immediate manager that we were ontop of the workload before booking these appointments?”
Him – “Well, yes”.
Me – “And that every single appointment I've scanned an emailed a letter directly from the hospital as proof, and have taken an adequate amount of annual leave for these appointments also?”
Him – “Yes, but they need to stop. HQ were very clear about this.”
Cut to two weeks later, me calling a meeting with the three of us and presenting my one sentence letter of resignation on the table. They were utterly gobsmacked. I'd repeated back to them that they literally told me that if they were “seriously concerned” about my output, maybe this job wasn't for me.
I am now thriving as a manager in a completely different industry three years later. If your boss is being a dickweed and not taking your health seriously, hang in there. You are worth more than their bottom line.
