Wife is quitting her job to pursue studying and her parents are disappointed.

My wife has been given the opportunity to study brewing, there's a scholarship for women and a traineeship/job involved and everything. She's only really ever worked basic hospitality jobs and I've really only worked basic retail jobs, we don't earn a lot and we're approaching 30. This is something she is passionate about, its a growing industry that aligns with our values of local produce and whatnot, and it would improve our income a lot. And her parent's reaction was basically a “aw nah sometimes you just have to suck it up and worked the hard jobs”. That is to say, she ought to plug away earning minimum wage instead of looking above her station or moving to an industry kind of “alternative”. I thought covid and the worldwide economic crisis' taught everyone that alternative lifestyles/jobs are becoming more necessary than ever and that now is the time for drastic…

What is it w older gen Xers/younger boomers, is it defensiveness bc they are in their 50's and still renting and working menial jobs? Do they actually believe that there is still a reward at the end of that tunnel?
