Better to quit or be fired?

Long story short my spouse has an abusive manager. Life has been hell. Well, I have some money coming my way that I can get an advance on to help us get through. So while I don’t like the thought of us not having an income we would be… ok… for a short while. Anyway, things have been wfh for months and now they are supposed to go back. That’s fine. My spouse was prepared. But we are iced in. We are in a valley with three ways out. All icy hills. And we can’t get traction to get out. Other, better, vehicles than ours are having trouble too. He told his boss that he can’t get out and was told that it’s “fine” and that he can wfh today, but he “has to” go in tomorrow. Things have been like this for years. Every issue is responded to as…

Every issue is responded to as a threat of termination followed by abuse and the employment equivalent of cuckolding. Edged out of meetings, having phone taken away, desk given away, etc. Abusive bullshit.

So now it comes down to the fact that he “must” go to the office tomorrow, but that is literally dependent on whether the city sands our area or not, or if the weather changes. FWIW this has NEVER happened before.

In addition to all this the company has offered a bonus for people who stay with the company through early April (I guess people might up and quit, is their thought) so it would be nice to get that bonus before leaving.

So, what’s the best bet here? He’s planning on finding a new position in the next few months anyway, but income always is preferred. But abuse sucks.

Does he put in his resignation? Does he allow himself to be fired? Call the guy’s bluff and see what he does? (Though if he doesn’t get fired the abuse will be rampant. He has a medical condition that has been used against him and he has had to fight tooth and nail for accommodation.)

What is the best way forward? What gives the best footing? What would you all do?
