What is up with having to do a whole bunch of research “project” for a company during the hiring process?

And you turn it in and it’s amazing, received very well, and then you don’t get the job? Is this free labor a thing? This sketches me out. Do any legitimate companies do this or is this a sign to run away as fast as you can?
