Our employer called us all for a meeting except the person being fired (classic I guess).
He told us that our colleague will be getting fired in a few days and to prepare his work to be outsourced. I have a very good relationship with the imminently dismissed.
The employer's decision to tell us before telling our colleague had me (foolishly?) thinking of three possible outcomes:
- I forewarn my coworker and the cunning employer understands that I told him by the possible lack of genuine response of the dismissed,
- I tell nothing and the cunning employer points out that he has already told me, so no need to tell us (I am 90% sure he will say that), and my coworker will feel betrayed for not being warned by me,
- I say to my boss something along the lines “you shouldn't tell us first, now I will be saying my coworker one way or another, so I either whistleblow it or let me announce him his dismisal”.
I chose No3 by actually telling him that if possible, I would like to announce him his dismisal, since I am pretty fed up with the job and don't care if I sound weird for taking up the task of telling him. I'm not sure I did the right thing, though. In the heat of the moment, it seemed the most suitable thing to do but perhaps my colleague would like to say something to my employer during the announce and I would be robbing him of this opportunity. I was first assured that the decision was final and nothing he will say will turn around the decision but still…
Employer said he's probably OK with me telling him, but I can revoke. So… I seriously have no idea what to do… š Any advice?
