My friend was interviewing and received several external offers. Friend ended up staying at the company for the counteroffer.
External offer was a higher title than friend’s current role, and the salary was higher.
Counter offer was a title match, and not a salary match, but more than friend’s current role
Now that friend accepted the counter (which was in writing and included a 3-4 week timeline), the company changing the counter terms:
1. Keeping the title change
2. Not giving the salary as expressed and giving a one-time bonus for the difference
3. If friend leaves in 6 months, friend has to pay back the bonus
What should friend do? My friends and I never encountered a situation like this so not sure what’s a good next step?
