Need Advice: Girlfriend’s employer is very shady and now four employees have had false tax returns filed using their SS #’s. What to do?

Background: My girlfriend began working at a med-spa specializing in laser treatments, etc. around 6 months ago. Out of the gate, she thought it was odd that every corner of the office space is being recorded for both video and audio with management listening to every conversation, personal or otherwise. Then rumors start to circulate that two founders have been deported back to their home countries. Remaining ownership tried to tell employees that this is not true nor an issue that would affect the business. Employees in their original, home location are being blacklisted when looking for new employment due to the outside perception from other clinics that the business is nothing but a money laundering scheme. Add to this dozens of other odd, bizarre instances that occur there on a daily basis and there's definitely smoke but a full on fire has yet to break out. Cut to yesterday…

Cut to yesterday and now she's telling me that four employees have had false tax returns filed under their names. The owner of the business held a call with these employees late last week and stated that this was all a “misunderstanding” and downplayed what had happened while admitting no wrongdoing by the business, which i find very strange. Yesterday the business held a conference call with their CPA and the affected employees where the accountant stated that this could have been much worse and everyone was lucky that “nothing really bad” took place. I find it very odd that an employer is jumping through so many hoops while admitting no wrong doing and frankly, none of the employees are really pressing them on how this could have happened.

What should happen here? Is it possible that an employer is filing false tax returns using employees SS #s? Is this even the right sub?
