Recently I planned a week vacation for a charity gaming event that a local Children's Miracle network hospital sent me to (flight and hotel all paid).
I had got approval from my boss who encouraged me to take the trip and said he had fully supported what I was doing for charity and commending me for it.
I told my boss, every day the week prior time off that I would be out of town the following week.
I took my time off, had a lovely time, won a bunch of money for my local CMN hospital.
I got back and immediately the day after my boss calls me stating they were not ready for me to be off a week and that they needed to slow down on what they were doing. That caught me off guard because anyone on my team could have done exactly what I was doing.
Immediately after that statement my boss followed up with a statement that after a month still disturbs me today. He said that I need to start estimating time that I am spent doing not work related things. To give preference I am work from home, I have worked from home almost full-time for the last 9 years (prior to covid). And this has never been a issue.
And to go even further, about 2 months ago my boss approached my team about overtime opportunity saying that if we wanted to work overtime that we'd get compensation for it (we are all salary). I refused because I have a family and it's important to me to give them time. Everyone else on our small team accepted this.
So not only am I being judged for my work time I was told that since I work 8 hours days (no more no less) that he questions the time I am spent working. Also, he admitted that he has not compensated anyone for the time they have worked overtime, so I am happy with my decision.
This honestly just proves how fucked American workplaces are. That if you don't give your all for basically nothing that you will get left behind.
Sorry this was an incoherent rant but I'm just sick of this type of bullshit and the normalization of it.
