So to start this off, I’m 17, I recently got a job as a waiter in a fancy hotel restaurant. My only prior work experience was at a relative’s business during the summer and that was quite informal.
So I had my “trial shift” (paid unlike other places) and they said they’d quite like to have me back. Honestly the shift was quite overwhelming and long, people did kind of treat me like shit in the heat of the service but I get that, I really just need ANY job at the moment as I need to save for university. My issue comes with the managers’ request that I cut my hair at the end. I have short hair on the back and sides but some curtains that go just past my eyes.
This is such a big problem for me as I’m non-binary, my hair is a very big part of my identity and provides essentially all of my confidence in my appearance. The last time I had “short” hair I absolutely despised it and really don’t want to go back to that, but I’m willing to maintain my current hair to this length.
I’m supposed to call her back and talk about what hours I can work, but I’m sure it’s going to come up. Can she really make me cut it? Should I stand for it? If so, are there any alternatives I could use like tying it up? Thank you for reading 🙂
