I need three weeks off work to train for another job. My current employer isn’t having it. Any ideas?

I am 3/4 time at my current job and the job I will be training for is on-call only for at least a year. That's why I don't want to quit my current job. Should I quit or wait for them to fire me for being a no-show. Any other options?
