“Fully remote” job being asked to come into office full time

I’m posting this on behalf of my fiancé, he works in IT doing service desk, so basically taking calls and helping people with tech issues. He got this job as fully remote from the start 1.5 years ago, aside from a few days of on site training when he started. There’s been a lot of management changes recently and with those changes top management wants all of his team to come into the office to “help team communication and more learning opportunities”. Now the main issue here is that our transportation situation has changed. We’re currently only have 1 car, which I use to commute 3 days out of 5 as I work a hybrid schedule. When we decided to go down to 1 car he knew he’d be ok since his job was remote, but that’s now up in the air. Second, even if we had a second car…

I’m posting this on behalf of my fiancé, he works in IT doing service desk, so basically taking calls and helping people with tech issues. Second, even if we had a second car (which is possible if it comes to it), but then he’s wasting time and money for his commute without a pay raise to compensate. Transit is not possible as we’re out in the suburbs. He is not the only one with a valid complaint either, other team members also don’t have reliable transportation and are out of the way of public transit so his company basically wants to screw all of them over. Please note that everyone has been able to do their job remotely just fine, and coming into the office has always been an option and maybe one person actually goes in. We’re both so frustrated that this is up for debate because we’ve arranged our lives around our job schedules and I’m also a bit worried he could get laid off for not agreeing to their terms (although they’d have to let a majority of the team go which would be ridiculous). Mostly just a vent, but wondering if anyone has any suggestions on holding his ground?
