I work in occupational health and safety for a relatively large corporation. I'm in Canada, but our HQ is in the states.
HR put together an “Engagement Committee” to celebrate and acknowledge those fake holidays throughout the year, such as Cupcake Day when people are encouraged to bring in cupcakes.
I brought up the fact that April 28th is the National Day of Mourning, an acknowledgement that started in Canada and has since been recognized in 100 countries to honour workers who have been injured or killed on the job. We work in a dangerous field, and have had dozens of lost-time incidents YTD and even had a fatality last year. I wasn't asking for much, just some basic respect and a moment of silence.
I was told that there wasn't room in the calendar to recognize the Day of Mourning. I'm writing this today because, although I'm a fan of Star Wars, HR decided to recognize today as one of those “holidays.”
This is simply a vent about how much I hate the corporate world and this constant bull shit.
