Boss asking me for evidence of minor surgery? (U.K.)

Looking for opinions as this sub is quite active. I’m having a minor surgery on Sunday and will require at least one, possibly more days off to recover, very unlikely more than a week. By the way I don’t work on Sundays, our work is closed over weekend. I was a little worried how they’d react as there’s a project starting on Tuesday I’m involved in. I told my deputy boss and she was fine with it, didn’t pry, and reassured me if I couldn’t come in on Tuesday she’ll have backups ready. I then told my main boss and she was fine with it, but then she said I need to send her evidence that I’m having my surgery and ‘I can hide confidential elements of the evidence if I want to’.

This is my first job but this doesn’t sound legal to me? Why is it necessary to provide evidence? I’m in the U.K. where we can legally take 5 cumulative sick days without a doctors note. And it wasn’t because she thought I’d be off for more than a week, because I stupidly told her I’d definitely miss Monday but I’ll try to recover by Tuesday/weds.

It just took me aback because since I started working here in October she has been a really nice and accommodating boss. Or maybe this is normal? Like I said I’m not too sure as it’s my first proper job
