I got an offer from a similar company in the same industry for a similar complexity role that comes with a substantial pay increase. I hadn't been looking and it's a long story but it sort of fell in my lap unexpectedly. I like the company I'm currently at, although I do have issues with my current manager (inappropriate behavior, condescending and patronizing, she doesn't know how to do her job and tries to make people feel dumb when they ask questions, etc. to the point that HR has been brought in). My partner works at the same company / in the same department, and I've really enjoyed that. I've also developed some great relationships with other people in the department.
I haven't been at my current company long at all, but I've been doing really well, learning fast, and received lots of positive feedback, and I do think I'm underpaid. I made the decision to bring the new offer to my current manager and her manager to ask if they could meet in the middle of my current comp and the offer. My manager seemed like she was open to it.
Her manager then called me back a few hours later to say that I don't deserve more because I came to this company with zero experience and she has no reason to think I should make more than I currently do, and another company offering more isn't a reason to pay me more. But….I don't have zero experience. I have a bachelors and masters degree in business. I interned in the same industry. I worked in a different industry for over 3 years in a much more complex and high profile role. I worked for 3 months right before this in a similar in many ways but less complex role in another industry. This current job is very much a middle ground between all my cumulative experience. Zero experience my ass, it was really insulting.
Anyway, I'm gonna leave, but jesus christ. My partner is really upset that he has to continue working with her once I dip.
