A while back I got a job at a record store. The boss was precisely what you would expect. Burnout 90's kid with money. He seemed cool but when he told me he was a “capitalist with socialist values” I kinda lost all respect lol. He bragged to me constantly about not paying taxes, paid me under the table, and a dollar under minimum wage. Constantly talked down to our female customer base. Had an insane superiority complex and was just outright insecure. Constant verbal abuse from him. My job was to itemize the store's inventory online. One day I told him that we couldn't directly upload inventory into the store and he had a meltdown took my store keys, and sent me home. Since I had worked for an hour that day I was legally entitled to 3 hours pay (Ontario, Canada). I texted him asking about it multiple times to no response. I ended up reporting him to the Board of Labour for wage theft and tax fraud. I ended up getting the money he owed me + backpay from underpayments. I was satisfied and happy that I was done dealing with him.
Flash forward to last week,
One of my friends tells me that my boss went bankrupt. In his posts he asks people to thank him for his service, getting a generalized anxiety disorder, trying coke (despite constant bragging about consistent drug use throughout his lifetime), dealing with an “unqualified staff team”, and delivering the news from his new accountant that he has to pay taxes.
Bosses are not above you or the law, call them on their shit!!
